People of all ages and abilities deserve the ability to get from Point A to Point B safely and quickly. Ending the epidemic of traffic injuries and deaths in our District is an integral part of Shahana’s public safety agenda. Pedestrian and transit safety and efficiency is the top concern Shahana’s office hears from constituents, and she has taken decisive, concrete action to address it. Having been unable to access many public transportation resources on account of a disability, Shahana has a personal understanding of the stakes of transit accessibility. Her tireless advocacy has resulted in the DOT and MTA making long-needed infrastructure improvements in District 39.

Shahana’s Accomplishments:

  • Shahana successfully launched a protected bike lane on 9th Street in Gowanus, resulting in increased cycling ridership and reduced crashes. She’s also working to secure further improvements to ensure this once-deadly corridor is safe for all riders.

  • She also worked closely with the Department of Transportation (DOT) to make the Atlantic Avenue corridor safer including signal changes, pedestrian islands, expanded mid-block crossings, curb enhancements, and the deployment of two full time traffic enforcement agents.

  • Shahana supports universal daylighting (removing parking spaces closest to the intersection for increased visibility) and has successfully pushed DOT to daylight multiple intersections in District 39.

  • When others wavered, Shahana strongly supported congestion pricing, ensuring it brings street safety improvements and vital MTA investments in our city.

  • Shahana proudly oversaw the opening of the 7th Avenue F/G train station elevators—a project she championed during her time as a staffer, which was seed-funded through a Participatory Budgeting allocation.

  • Shahana has been instrumental in supporting the creation and maintenance of public spaces and plazas, including School Streets and Open Streets in the district. These include Kensington Plaza, Avenue C Plaza, 4th Street Plaza, and the 5th Avenue Open Street.

Shahana’s Vision:

  • Shahana will continue to collaborate with local organizations like the Park Slope Civic Council, the Fifth Avenue BID, Transportation Alternatives, Good Neighbors of Park Slope, Deliveristas Unidos, the Cobble Hill Association, and others to push for urgent street safety improvements such as universal daylighting and better connectivity across neighborhoods. She supports increased enforcement on issues like ghost plates, abandoned vehicles, and traffic violations to ensure safer streets for all.

  • Shahana will fight for her bold vision for expanding Open Streets and improving public space maintenance across Brooklyn as she explains in this op-ed in BKLYNER.

  • Shahana will continue being an outspoken advocate for a series of design fixes that would significantly enhance street safety, as detailed in her op-ed in Streetsblog.

  • Shahana is committed to creating a comprehensive transportation plan that strengthens the connections between Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill.

  • Shahana will continue advocating for a safer Grand Army Plaza that includes better infrastructure and traffic patterns for pedestrians and cyclists.

  • Shahana will keep fighting for better bus service including restoring the B71 and launching a new line to connect Red Hook directly to Manhattan.

  • Shahana is dedicated to working with her colleagues to regulate the growing e-bike industry, ensuring that safety remains a top priority.
