Having lived with an autoimmune disease, Shahana has firsthand experience with our broken healthcare system. Her struggles accessing care drive her to fight for the health of New Yorkers in the Council.
Shahana’s Accomplishments:
Shahana has championed the rights of City retirees, standing against the Mayor’s efforts to strip them of their current coverage by replacing it with inferior privatized Medicare Advantage plans.
Shahana sponsored and voted to establish the Office of Healthcare Accountability, which is working with all stakeholders to bring down the cost of care.
Her Office has supported the Period Project, led by local middle and high school students, to advance menstrual equity across public schools.
Shahana gets that green spaces are essential to our physical and mental wellbeing. That’s why she has secured millions in funding for local parks infrastructure and programming including better playgrounds, dog runs, and pickleball courts.
Shahana firmly believes that our older adults have the right to age in place with dignity. She’s worked closely with Council Aging Chair Crystal Hudson to pass legislation addressing the needs of seniors. She’s also partnered with local senior centers and advocates to stave off Mayor Adams’s proposed cuts to critical aging programs.
Shahana’s Vision:
Shahana supports a single payer insurance system, which is why she endorses Medicare for All on the federal level and the New York Health Act on the state level.
Shahana has been a vocal opponent of the concrete recycling facility in the Columbia Waterfront, which is causing air pollution for local residents. She won’t stop fighting until the site is closed.
Shahana supports the 1% for Parks campaign that would give our green spaces the investment that they deserve.
